Home Styling is a Feeling

Home styling

Coming home and walking through that front door should feel like you’re getting a lovely warm hug: cosy, calm and at peace.  It should be your safe haven away from the world outside where you can kick off your shoes, dance around the kitchen without a care in the world, where you can curl up on the sofa and watch your favourite TV programme with the dog snoring beside you (in my home)

It is assumed that Home Styling is just about the appearance and making everything look pleasing to the eye but it is so much more than that. Yes the appearance of a room matters but it is how it makes you feel that is most important and these simple hacks can help you achieve a space that makes you feel cosy, safe, free to be you:

Texture is so important especially in these Autumn/Winter months adding sheepskin (or faux sheepskin) rugs to your floors, chairs, sofa, bed add an instant feel of warmth and comfort. Big chunky wool throws draped over a sofa or bed add texture couple these with cushions – knitted, velvet or sheepskin all give visual impact and make you feel cosy/warm

Cherished items whether that’s photos of loved ones or pets, mementoes of a holiday, items that you fell in love with, heirlooms all these things are so important in a room mentally they make you feel relaxed, raise your endorphins the happy hormone, bring back memories these are what make a house a home and if you’ve got something that you are not sure how to style then give me a shout I’m always happy to help even if it’s a small question.

I like to add lots of natural texture to my spaces almost like bringing the outdoors in especially in Winter when everything outside is hibernating. Wooden bowls, stone vases, dried grasses are a favourite if you pick them now they will dry naturally over the Winter. These in this picture I’ve had for a couple of years grasses picked from a field and poppy seed heads from the garden.

Finally, candles and tea lights my absolute favourite for these cosy months who can resist the flicker of a candle on dark nights, tea lights placed in a gloomy corner immediately elevate the space and give a cosy glow and dot them around the room the more the merrier. I know some people can’t have candles because of children or cats but there are so many really good faux candles on the market now I always keep a few in stock for use at Fairs.
