Should We Mix Fresh and Faux Flowers?

Faux peony arrangement

THE ANSWER IS YES.

In an ideal world we would be able to pop out into the garden pick a bunch of flowers arrange them in a vase and place them where we want in our home. For most of us this isn’t reality and to be honest a lot of flowers either don’t have a long vase life or have a very short garden life and what about Winter when only evergreen foliage is available.

Your local florist will always have a good range of flowers available and so do most supermarkets. Let’s say you’ve been to your local florist/supermarket and purchased a bunch of your favourite flowers, you get home put them in your vase and they look sparse. Here’s a couple of solutions:

  1. Grab your gardening gloves and secateurs and go foraging in the garden for foliage to add to the arrangement, you can always find something green in the garden whatever time of year make sure to cut the foliage at an angle and remove all lower leaves/small branches before adding them to your vase. I would arrange a few around the outside first and then add a couple in between the flowers, don’t go mad obviously the flowers are the star of the show. If you want to add some height find some spindly twigs and put between the flowers, as a rule of thumb with flower arranging try and do things in odd numbers
  2. Add some faux flowers or foliage to the vase to complement the bunch you have purchased, it’s currently Spring here in the UK you can buy a bunch of tulips in the supermarket for £5 by adding 3 faux Cherry blossom stems you have elevated the arrangement.

This can be reversed for faux flowers. Peonies are one of my favourite flowers but usually have quite a short flowering season due to the weather which in turn means they are only available to buy for a short time.

In early May I put 3 faux Peony stems in a vase I then add foliage from the garden and create my arrangement (all the Willow & Hen faux flowers have plastic coated wire stems so they can be placed in water safely and also they can be bent to fit any vase). As the foliage dies off I will simply replace with more from the garden. In Autumn I will dry the peony stems and pack them away until next May.

The same options can be used when making a door wreath mix up the fresh and faux flowers with foliage from the garden or hedgerow.

One of my favourite things to do is add grasses to flower arrangements they not only add height but dry beautifully and can be used over and over again be careful with the stems as they become quite brittle when dry.
